Between 1772 and 1808, Hindu and Muslim artists decorated the walls of the palace at Chamba with miniature paintings surrounded by floral borders. The painters (many trained at the Mughal court in Delhi) came from Chamba and nearby principalities. Those paintings may have been the inspiration for rumal imagery, including this one. In fact, it is likely that for rumals of this quality, court painters drew the designs and professionals performed the embroidery.
