Shi'a Muslims say that after Muhammad’s death, his son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib was the first Imam appointed by Allah, and they consider Ali and his descendants to be the rightful successors to Muhammad. Sunni Muslims revere Ali as well, not as an appointee of Allah, but as the fourth and final of the Rightly Guided Caliphs who followed in the Prophet’s footsteps.
